JAMES M. PORTER - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 03/23/1843. JAMES M. PORTER Serving as Secretary of War before the Senate rejected his nomination, Porter passes on a letter from "a friend of the present administration" to Navy Secretary Upshur. Autograph Letter signed: "J. M. Porter", 1 page, 8x10. War Department [Washington], 1843 March 23. To A. P. Upshur, Secretary of the Navy. In full: "I enclose a letter received this morning from Philadelphia. [Item not included.] The writer Mr. Joseph Hall is a respectable man and a friend of the present administration. He is the keeper of a hotel in the City of Philadelphia. Yours truly". James Madison Porter (1793-1862) was appointed Secretary of War by President Tyler on March 8, 1843. On January 30, 1844, almost ten months later, the U.S. Senate rejected the nomination 38-3. It probably wasn't a personal affront to Porter. Tyler was a Democrat who ran as a Whig for Vice President. After Harrison died one month into his four-year term and Tyler succeeded him in office, there was much congressional opposition to the new Chief Executive. His opponents called him "His Accidency." When Tyler's policies diverged severely from Whig principles, most of Harrison's Cabinet appointees resigned in protest. Tyler's appointments of Secretary of the Treasury Caleb Cushing, Secretary of the Navy David Henshaw, and Secretary of the Treasury James S. Green were also rejected by the U.S. Senate. In 1847, Porter became the first President of the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Railroad and, in 1849, was elected to the Pennsylvania state legislature. He was also a founder of Lafayette College.
